News > Chastain to Play Pitt’s Wife in “Tree of Life”

Relative newcomer Jessica Chastain has been cast as Brad Pitt's character's wife in Terrence Malick's newest feature film "Tree of Life." Variety reports that the film has been shooting in Malick's native Texas for the past few days and that the story "concerns the loss of innocence as seen through the eyes of the son of the characters portrayed by Pitt and Chastain." Sean Penn will play a supporting role.

Despite a film career that has played out over the course of four decades, this is only Malick's fifth feature film. His first two films were bona fide classics of the "New Hollywood" movement of the 1970s, "Badlands" and "Days of Heaven." Shortly after "Days of Heaven," Malick largely removed himself from public life and did not emerge until twenty years later with meditative or difficult, depending on whom you ask, World War II drama "The Thin Red Line." His fourth film "The New World" was met with a rather cool reception, but if you're like me, you hold out hope that the old man still has it in him. And really, by the numbers at least, he's done better than break even so far.

Chastain's other upcoming projects are Al Pacino's "Salomaybe?" and Dan Ireland's "Jolene," and she'll be playing the title character in both (well, Salome in "Salomaybe?"). Talk about coming out of nowhere.
