News > War of Incentives, New York Now Offering 30%
"One-upmanship" was the hyphenated word of the day when the 23rd annual AFCI (Association of Film Commissioners International) Locations Trade Show came to the Santa Monica Auditorium in California last week. Film commissions from around the world had come to announce their new tax incentive packages, some even changed their plans while the three-day show was going on.
Canadian province Manitoba offered a "'Starbucks card' approach (shooting three films within a two-year period) and a rural bonus, with a possibility of receiving up to a whopping 65%." New York State upped its own plan during the show to offer incentives of up to 30%. Many other film commissions argued that these "race to the bottom" tactics would create a "false economy." But for all of you aspiring filmmakers out there, now is looking like a good time to get shooting.
