The real-life pregnancy of Zoey 101 star Jamie Lynn Spears has not deterred from viewers from tuning into the fourth and final season of her show, which premiered on Sunday, January 27, with special back-to-back episodes.
An average of 5.9 million viewers watched Zoey 101’s season 4 premiere, with the first episode taking in 5.7 million and the second drawing 6 million. The figures are the tween series’ best season opening to date.
Although the show has always been popular with the tween audience, interest in Zoey 101 soared even higher in the recent months, with show star Jamie Lynn Spears announcing in December that she is, indeed, with child. Spears, younger sister of troubled pop sensation Britney Spears, has now chosen to keep a low-profile, presumably until after she has given birth.
"She is on hiatus," Spears’ publicist, Holly Shakoor, said Monday.
The third season finale of Zoey 101 that aired earlier this month drew 7.3 million viewers, another record for the Nickelodeon comedy. The hour-long episode ended with a cliffhanger, with Jamie Lynn Spear’s Zoey moving to England with her parents, only to inadvertently find out that her best buddy Chase (Sean Flynn) is in love with her.
The show’s new season, which was completed last summer and planned to be its last even before Spears became pregnant, opened with yet another plot twist. In the hour-long premiere, Zoey returns to PCA, to the delight of her friends Quinn (Erin Sanders) and Lola (Victoria Justice). She tells them that she knows about Chase’s true feelings, and says she needs to talk to him. Although happy for Zoey, Quinn and Lola try everything in their power to keep Zoey from talking to Chase because as it turns out, he’s gone off to England to be with Zoey. However, she finds out eventually, and confronts Chase via a webcam and tells him she could be in love with him as well. There’s only one problem though: Chase promised his parents he would stay in England for one full semester.
The fourth and final season of Zoey 101 has a total of 13 episodes. The show airs every Sunday night at 8pm on Nickelodeon.
