Mario Van PeeblesYesterday on All My Children saw the demise of Hannah, Stacy Haiduk’s character, as she plummeted to her doom after letting go of Zach’s (Thorsten Kaye) hand.  In the current issue of Soap Opera Weekly, Kaye speaks about his ex-lover’s death.

"The weirdest part about that is I was holding on to Hannah, she let go, and I looked up and Greenlee looked completely different,” Kaye remarked, in reference to Rebecca Budig’s return as Greenlee Smythe.  “Obviously, Hannah’s death took a bigger toll on her than it did on me," Kaye quipped further.

Aside from Budig, All My Children will also welcome a new addition to Pine Valley, in the person of actor and director Mario Van Peebles.  The man who gave life to the titular character Solo in the mid-90s film of the same name is being brought in to play a potential foil/flame for one the show’s longest serving characters, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci).

Van Peebles will play Senatorial candidate Samuel Woods, who makes a guest appearance on Kane’s talk show, New Beginnings, as part of his campaign.  Their initial encounter is anything but friendly.  As one spokesperson for the show put it, Van Peebles’ character will be Erica’s “worst nightmare.”

Despite their less than amiable first meeting however, there are hints that the usual love/hate scenario could play out, with sparks of animosity possibly turning into sparks of romance and passion.

Van Peebles’ All My Children debut on January 29 marks his return to daytime television for the first time in 25 years.  The last time he took a turn on a soap was back in 1982, when he appeared in One Life to Live as a character called Doc Gilmore.  He has since starred in big screen vehicles like Jaws: The Revenge, New Jack City which he also directed, and alongside Will Smith’s academy award nominated portrayal of boxing legend, Ali.
