Carly Pope, a 27-year-old actress most famous for her leading role in the old WB series Popular, has become the latest addition to the cast of 24.  In the upcoming seventh season, Pope will play the girlfriend of the President’s son.  The new President of the United States on 24 is the show’s first female president and will be portrayed by Broadway veteran Cherry Jones.  While this is the first we’ve heard of the President’s son (or his girlfriend), FOX has given us one of the first major plot points of Day 7.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pope will be playing Samantha Roth, the girlfriend of the President’s missing son, and Pope’s character may or may not have something to do with his disappearance.  Interesting.

Carly Pope has bounced around since her breakthrough role on Popular.  She’s gone from TV roles (The Collector, Dirt) to high-profile movies (Orange County, Two for the Money) to small indie films (Itty Bitty Titty Committee).  She’s a good actress and a damn good looking person, and hopefully this season of 24 will get her some notoriety.  It sounds like a juicy role, especially is she ends up being involved in the disappearance of the President’s son.

I think we can safely assume that the President’s son storyline is only a minor part of a much larger, diabolical plot.  Since so many actors have been cast in roles as FBI agents, you have to wonder what the FBI is going to be doing in season 7.  Up to this point, I had assumed that they’d all be attempting to track down a fugitive Jack Bauer.  Now, maybe the FBI and Jack are racing to find the President’s son.  If this is the case, I’m sure Jack will have his reasons to speak with the kid.

Carly Pope is just one more nice addition to the absurd amount of new cast members.  Look at this list and tell me your not excited: Annie Wersching, Colm Feore, Bob Gunton, Jeffrey Nordling,(who co-starred in the FX drama Dirt with Pope) Janeane Garofalo, Rhys Coiro, Cherry Jones, John Billingsley, Ever Carradine, Carly Pope.
