Busy Philipps, most recently seen on ER, will be appearing on How I Met Your Mother early in the CBS comedy’s third season, according to TV Guide. Phillipps will play the nemesis of Trudy, played by Winnie Cooper herself Danica McKellar, with whom Ted (Josh Radnor) has a quick fling. Trudy and Phillipps’ character are college “frenemies” (I actually kind of hate that word, preferring “nemesis,” but that’s the word TV Guide uses, so we’ll go with it, albeit grudgingly) who suddenly become rivals for Ted’s affection. There appears to be the possibility that Ted will hook up with both ladies at some point, which is pretty sweet news for Ted.
Just for fun, let’s play “One Degree of Judd Apatow.” Busy Philipps got her start on Freaks and Geeks, a show created by Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, Superbad) and widely considered one of the best TV shows of all-time, a sentiment with which I agree. How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segel also got his start on Freaks and Geeks alongside Philipps. Philipps’ co-star on ER, Linda Cardellini, also got her start on Freaks and Geeks. Cardellini and Segel, in fact, dated for years, a relationship spawned from their time on Freaks.
Fast forward to 2007, and the spawn of Judd Apatow is incestuous and stunning. The three biggest comedy hits of the year all have serious Freaks and Geeks ties. Seth Rogen, star of Knocked Up and Superbad, also got his start on Freaks. Martin Starr, legendary geek on Freaks and Geeks, co-starred in both Knocked Up and Superbad. Jason Segel co-starred in Knocked Up and, this summer, filmed a movie called Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which he wrote and is the lead actor in. The film is produced by Judd Apatow and is loosely based on the fallout of Segel’s relationship with Linda Cardellini. Busy Phillipps, although she hasn’t appeared in any recent Apatow productions, is credited for coming up with the story to the Will Ferrell hit Blades of Glory.
Whew. Anyway, Busy Philipps brings a unique presence wherever she goes, adding a darkly comedic feel to the hot blonde archetype. Phillips will first appear on How I Met Your Mother’s October 15 episode.
